WASHINGTON – Ann McDaniel has been named senior director of human resources of The Washington Post Company, effective January 29, 2001, the company announced today. McDaniel is currently managing editor of Newsweek and head of its Washington bureau.

Beverly R. Keil, vice president of The Washington Post Company with responsibility for human resources, has announced her plans to retire by the end of 2001. Keil, 54, joined the company in 1979 and has held her current position since 1982. She will be succeeded by McDaniel, 44.

“While Bev’s decision to retire saddens me, I am delighted Ann has agreed to take on this new challenge,” said Donald E. Graham, chairman and chief executive officer of The Washington Post Company.

“Ann is a first-class journalist and editor. During her 17-year career at Newsweek, she has guided editorial staff through many high-profile news events and has had significant responsibility for Newsweek’s editorial staffing matters,” Graham said.

McDaniel was named managing editor in November 1998. Prior to that she served as an assistant managing editor, guiding the magazine’s overall direction since December 1995. Additionally, as Washington bureau chief since January 1997, McDaniel has directed Newsweek’s team of D.C.-based national-affairs reporters, who cover the White House, Pentagon, State Department, and other areas.

McDaniel also has served as chief of correspondents since February 1993. Previously, she covered the Bush administration as White House correspondent from 1988 to 1992. She first joined the magazine as Washington correspondent in January 1984 to report on legal issues.

Prior to joining Newsweek, McDaniel worked as a general assignment reporter and later as Washington correspondent for the Dallas Times Herald.

She is the recipient of a Ford Foundation Fellowship to study law and in June 1983 completed a Master of Studies in Law degree at Yale Law School. She is an alumna of Vanderbilt University.
